Monitoring of MSW storage places
Virtually, the only source of information which provides full and current information about the problem and at the same time minimizes the time consumption as well as labor and financial costs for solving this problem, is the modern remote sensing data. By far the most effective method of monitoring the waste storage sites is be based on modern computer technology, in particular the means of remote sensing data processing and GIS. Satellite imagery combined with selective ground control, as well as other sources of information such as available electronic maps and digital elevation models, are the basis for the rapid identification, mapping and monitoring of landfills.

The picture taken on 09.08.2007 makes it possible to identify a waste site along the access road to the quarry. Judging by the picture taken on 31.05.2009 it is clear that a significant part of the territory is used for waste disposal. In the map of the territory planning this place is marked with an attribute "Reclamation of existing landfills". In fact on 18.09.2010 remediation is not observed, on the contrary, the waste appears to be placed at the entrances to as unauthorized dump. The total area of the landfill is estimated at 1.87 ha.
Satellite images with an ultrahigh spatial resolution (0.5 - 1 m) are used for monitoring. This data includes photographs from such satellites as WorldView-1/2, GeoEye, Pleiades, QuickBird, Ikonos and several others. Minuteness and geometric accuracy of these images enables a certain interpretation of dumps, measurements (linear dimensions, area) and determination of the coordinates and types of landfills (municipal, industrial, constructive, agricultural, forestry and others.). To identify the facts of either reduction or increase of the area of the previously identified landfills as well as to monitor the implementation of measures taken for their remediation, it is very effective to use multi-temporal composites. In such pictures, the changes in the scale of any objects including waste sites are particularly pronounced which guaranties an unmistakable and cost-effective monitoring.

Nowadays one of the most effective ways to inform all the people concerned about the results of the imagery interpretation is a creation of a geoportal. Some of its distinctive features are:
- enables output of generalized statistical information according to certain criteria (type of landfill, the date of detection, category, territorial affiliation, etc.);
- enables update of information (clarification of information concerning the field data, as well as the application of new objects by the user);
- automated Generation of Object’s ID.
